CANCrocodile - Contactless CAN Bus, SAE J1939, OBD-II, And SAE J1708 Reader
Posted by
onThe CANCrocodile product line was created for safe and sound data reading from a vehicle CAN Bus network. The contactless reader can be used for vehicle telematics, GPS tracking systems, and monitoring multiple CAN Bus parameters of vehicle operation.
These include speed, RPM, oil pressure & temperature, fuel volume & consumption, and more.
The data reading takes place without electrical connection and without damaging the CAN Bus wires.
CANCrocodile works in “listen-only” mode, i.e., it does not change the original CAN Bus or SAE J1939 messages, and it does not transmit any signals into the CAN Bus.
How Crocodile Contactless Readers Work
Crocodile's operating principle is based on detecting changes in the electromagnetic field around wires - the reader "sniffs" the signals without electrical connection and without breaking the integrity of wire insulation.
This way of data reading ensures safe and error-free operation of a vehicle and its ECUs (what is not guaranteed if a telematics unit is directly connected to data bus), which is especially vital for maintaining the warranty for new and leased machinery.
Advantages of Crocodile Contactless Readers
- Reads signals engine data buses wires without interference into electronics system
- Quick installation without configuration, wires are firmly fixed inside reader’s case.
- Powered from vehicle’s 12/24V network, power supply range is 10-50V.
- LED indication allows visual inspecting of reader’s operation mode.
- Reader’s wires are resistant to corrosion, mechanical damages and temperature fluctuations - meet requirements of automotive industry.
- Wide compatibility with GPS trackers of various manufacturers.
1708Crocodile - Contactless SAE J1708 Bus Reader
The 1708Crocodile is designed for secure data reading from an SAE J1708 bus (SAE J1587) of vehicles. The contactless reader is used within vehicle telematics and GPS tracking systems for receiving various parameters of vehicle operation from the bus, such as speed, RPM, oil pressure & temperature, fuel volume & consumption, and more.
The data reading occurs without electrical connection and without damaging wires. The 1708Crocodile works in “listen-only” mode, i.e., it does not change original SAE J1708 messages and does not transmit any signals.

CANCrocoLITE - Contactless CAN Bus Reader
CANCrocoLITE is used for contactless data reading from CAN bus of personal cars and light commercial vehicles. CANCrocoLITE generates output signal fully corresponding to data set of connected vehicle bus.
CANCrocoLITE can be used within Telematics system to obtain available data on fuel consumption, engine operation modes, status of sensors and gauges, presence of malfunctions.
CANCrocoLITE can be installed on all types of personal cars, vans and light commercial vehicles equipped with CAN Bus. CANCrocoLITE is compatible with all types of Telematics terminals that have a port for CAN Bus connection.
FMSCrocodile - Contactless FMS Gateway
The Fleet Management Systems Interface (FMS) is a standard interface for monitoring vehicle data of commercial diesel-engine vehicles. European manufacturers such as Daimler AG, MAN AG, Scania, Volvo (including Renault), DAF Trucks, and IVECO created the MS-Standard in 2002 to advance manufacturer-independent telematics applications.
The data format complies with the SAE J1939 Standard. The message frequency is between 20 ms (e.g., engine speed) and 10 seconds (e.g., vehicle identification number).
The FMSCrocodile contactless gateway securely monitors CAN bus data without any electrical contact with the CAN wires, and it automatically generates and sends FMS and Telematics messages to its output CAN 2.0B interface (SAE J1939 Standard). Thus, telematics unit configuration is simple since irrelevant data from the bus is filtered, and the gateway transmits only useful information for vehicle telematics applications.
