The March 2023 issue of the CAN Newsletter, a CiA (CAN-in-Automation) online publication, posted an article on the selection criteria and requirements for a Telematics gateway.
With cars evolving towards network technologies, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) require telematics solutions that boost seamless communication within and outside the vehicle. The device should be cloud-enabled, connectable to servers for real-time computation and analysis, and offer an intuitive user interface allowing users to interact and control various procedures.
When selecting a telematics gateway, the development engineer must consider various factors. These include the type and nature of clients, geographical conditions, the average distance to cover, plus the vehicle type. Consequently, the following considerations apply:
- Connectivity options: Dependable connectivity solutions are imperative for connected mobility data transformation. The telematics gateway must scale up and down communication standards based on the connectivity infrastructure needed for the vehicle. Depending on the end application, a telematics gateway must support multiple wireless communication infrastructures such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication), etc.
- Type of data to be collected: The increasing number of vehicle makers, models, and options necessitate a telematics gateway with a modular architecture capable of supporting multiple interfaces to the in-vehicle networks, for instance, Controller Area Network (CAN), including higher-layer protocols such as CANopen or SAE J1939, Ethernet, EIA-232, EIA-485, and others.
- Software flexibility: Scalable software is a must for simultaneously tracking diverse assets and vehicles. The software stacks supported on the gateway should assure interoperability among different vehicles and mobility infrastructures and reduce the development time of customized applications.

SAE J1939 ECU Simulator Board With USB Port
The SAE J1939 gateway allows you to monitor, simulate, and record any PGN as defined in the SAE J1939-71 Standard but also including diagnostic messages according to SAE J1939-73.
The board supports the full SAE J1939 protocol according to J1939/81 Network Management (Address Claiming) and J1939/21 Transport Protocol (TP). It is also supported by an extensive programming interface for Windows and Linux/Ubuntu applications, including full C/C++/C# source code for short time-to-market developments.
Vehicle Tracking With Diagnostic Features Using CAN Bus, OBD-II, SAE J1939
ERM launched Starlink Tracker, a complete connected car unit that integrates advanced vehicle tracking, driver behavior monitoring, theft prevention, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 4 G capabilities in one device. A CAN Bus interface, supporting OBD-II or SAE J1939, is also available. The telematics product is the first under the company’s wireless connect strategy, which aims to use wireless technologies to provide [...]
