SAE J1939 - GPS Module - Firmware Update To Support Time & Date And Vehicle Direction & Speed

Posted by Industry News on

SAE J1939 - GPS Module With 9-Pin Deutsch Connection CableThe jCOM.J1939.GPS device by Copperhill Technologies connects to an SAE J1939 network and reports the vehicle position (PGN 65267) with a five second frequency, according to the SAE J1939-71 Standard.

The integrated J1939 protocol stack automatically negotiates a node address in the range of 128 to 247. The GPS data is broadcast by using the global destination address (255 = 0xFF).

In addition, The jCOM.J1939.GPS device provides automatic CAN baud rate detection (250/500 kBaud).

The device's firmware can be updated on-site per the integrated RS232 port, which also allows the loading of customer-specific features.

Starting with firmware version 2.0, the jCOM.J1939.GPS device responds to requests for Time & Date (PGN 65254) and Vehicle Direction & Speed (PGN 65256).

A Comprehensible Guide to J1939 by Wilfried VossSAE J1939 has become the accepted industry standard and the vehicle network technology of choice for off-highway machines in applications such as construction, material handling, and forestry machines. J1939 is a higher-layer protocol based on Controller Area Network (CAN).

It provides serial data communications between microprocessor systems (also called Electronic Control Units - ECU) in any kind of heavy duty vehicles.

The messages exchanged between these units can be data such as vehicle road speed, torque control message from the transmission to the engine, oil temperature, and many more.

The information in this book is based on two documents of the SAE J1939 Standards Collection: J1939/21 - Data Link Layer J1939/81 - Network Management A Comprehensible Guide to J1939 is the first work on J1939 besides the SAE J1939 standards collection. It provides profound information on the J1939 message format and network management combined with a high level of readability.
