CAN FD Controller With Integrated CAN Transceiver And SPI Interface
Posted by
onTexas Instruments has introduced their TCAN4550, a CAN FD stand-alone controller with integrated (on-chip) transceiver. The TCAN4550 represents an interface between a CAN Bus network and a host controller through a serial peripheral interface (18-MHz SPI).
It supports the Classical CAN and the CAN FD data link layer. In addition, the chip comes with CAN FD transceiver functionality: differential transmit capability to the bus lines, and differential receiving capability from the CAN Bus connection. The controller supports wake-up functionality via local wake-up (LWU) and bus wake-up using the Wake-up Pattern (WUP) as defined in ISO 11898-2:2016.
The integrated circuitry incorporates protection features including a failsafe mode, an internal dominant state timeout, a full bus operating range, and a timeout watchdog.
The chip comes in a 20-pin VQFN package measuring 4.5 mm by 3.5 mm. It is very well suitable for automotive as well as industrial and building automation applications. It features a +/- 42-VDC bus-fault detection and +/-12-VDC common-mode. When not powered, the logic and bus signals maintain high resistance.

CAN FD Breakout Board With SPI Interface
The CAN FD breakout board utilizes the Microchip MCP2517FD CAN FD controller in combination with the MCP2562FD CAN Bus transceiver.
The MCP2517FD is a cost-effective and small-footprint CAN FD controller that efficiently connects to a microcontroller over an SPI interface.
Consequently, the CAN FD channel presents an extension to a microcontroller that is either lacking a CAN FD peripheral, or that doesn’t have sufficient CAN FD channels.
The MCP2517FD supports both, CAN Bus data frames in the Classical format (CAN2.0 A/B) and CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD) format.
