Renesas R-Car-S4 - Automotive System-on-Chip (SoC) for Car Server/Communication Gateway

Renesas has launched a software development board featuring the R-Car S4 System-on-Chip (SoC). The scope of delivery includes the Whitebox SDK open-source software.

The R-Car S4 facilitates the launch of Car Server/CoGW with high performance, high-speed networking, high security, and high functional safety levels required as E/E architectures grow into domains and zones. The R-Car S4 solution allows designers to re-use up to 88 percent of software code developed for 3rd generation R-Car SoCs and RH850 MCU applications. The software package sustains the real-time cores with drivers and essential software such as Linux BSP and hypervisors.

The R-Car S4 starter kit includes essential R-Car S4 onboard interfaces such as two CAN FD interfaces, an LIN port, and an Ethernet TSN switch, as well as memory such as 4 GiB of LPDDR4, 128 GiB of universal flash storage, and 64 MiB of quad SPI flash memory. In addition, users can extend peripheral functionality by using expansion connectors and customize the hardware according to individual needs. Furthermore, Renesas supplies the R-Car S4 Whitebox SDK, an open-source automotive development environment for the R-Car S4. The code consists of free-of-charge software without attached license agreements. The package includes sample software, test programs, and resource monitoring tools for over-the-air (OTA) software updates, intrusion prevention software (IPS), and an intrusion detection system (IDS) for network security.
