Kvaser Leaf v3 supports Classical CAN and CAN FD

Every professional CAN Bus development, may it be Classical CAN, CAN FD, or higher layer protocols such as SAE J1939, requires a data monitoring device for proof of functionality.

Kvaser has introduced such a device, the Leaf v3 interface supporting Classical CAN and CAN FD in optional Silent Mode. The Leaf series depicts one of the straightforward and low-cost techniques of connecting a computer to a CAN Bus network to monitor and transmit Classical CAN and CAN FD frames. The Leaf v3 model is a successor to the Kvaser Leaf Light HS v2 with a 9-pin DSUB connector. The device adds CAN FD capability and silent mode, a key VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) application feature. The silent mode allows users to listen in on a CAN Bus network without injecting data that other nodes would detect. This feature will enable the device to perform automatic CAN bit rate detection.

With its standard USB type A connector and 9-pin DSUB connector, the Leaf v3's elegant and ergonomically designed enclosure is robust enough for daily use and small and sufficient for space-constrained applications. The device operates within a -20 °C to + 70 °C temperature range, weighs 110 g, and sizes 35 mm x 165 mm 17 mm. It can handle up to 20,000 messages per second. Each data frame includes a timestamp with a resolution of 50 μs. 

The Leaf v3 incorporates the MCP2561FD CAN transceiver and supports CAN CC (classic) with up to 1 Mbit/s and CAN FD communication with up to 8 Mbit/s. No external power is required, and galvanic isolation is the standard. The device also supports Magisync to use various other Kvaser interfaces simultaneously. The supported operating systems include Windows and Linux. Kvaser's CAN hardware operates around the same software API (Application Programming Interface). As a result, applications developed using one device type will run without modification on other device types.

It can be powered by an external +12 VDC power supply with reverse voltage protection. The Teensy 4.0 is an Arduino-compatible board with an Arm Cortex-M7 microcontroller at 600 MHz. The board is compatible with the Arduino IDE and the Arduino library. In most cases, code written for another Arduino board works with a minimum of changes on a Teensy.
