MSC SM2S-IMX8Plus SMARC 2.1 module family

Avnet Integrated announced the release of their scalable MSC SM2S-IMX8Plus SMARC 2.1 module family, integrating the i.MX 8M Plus processor from NXP.

The modules utilize the 1.8-GHz dual- or quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processors plus the 800-MHz Arm Cortex-M7 real-time processor plus the GC7000UL 2D/3D graphics processing unit (GPU). Several options are available with and without the video processing unit (VPU), machine learning accelerator (NPU), or image signal processor (ISP). The board supports up to 4-GiB SDRAM and up to 256-GiB eMMC Flash memory (optional) for application and data storage. The embedded interfaces include two Gbit/s-Ethernet connections, PCI Express, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and two CAN Bus ports.

The graphics interfaces are dual-channel LVDS, MIPI DSI, and HDMI 2.0., and two MIPI CSI-2 interfaces for camera modules. Alternatively, the boards come with a wireless interface (WLAN, Bluetooth). Support for Linux is available, and Android support is possible on request.

The modules measure 82 mm x 50 mm, and they are specified for an extended temperature range from -40 °C to +85 °C with power consumption between 2 W and 7 W. Common applications include machine learning solutions, image processing systems, multimedia systems, industrial IoT (Internet of Things), as well as smart home and building automation solutions.

Engineering samples of the modules are available with the pre-production SoCs (System on Chip) from NXP, enabling users to begin product developments. A general release of the processor is scheduled for Q1 2021. Furthermore, Avnet provides design tools, starter kits, board support packages (BSPs), and design-in support and carrier design review services.

PICAN FD - CAN Bus FD Duo Board with Real Time Clock & SMPS for Raspberry Pi

PICAN FD - CAN Bus FD Duo Board with Real Time Clock & SMPS for Raspberry Pi

The PiCAN FD Duo board provides two-channel CAN-Bus FD capability for the Raspberry Pi. It uses the Microchip MCP2517FD CAN controller with MCP2562FD CAN transceiver. The connection is made via a 4-way screw terminal. A real-time clock with battery backup (battery not included) is also on the board.

The board also comes with a 5 VDC 1A SMPS that powers the Raspberry Pi via the screw terminal. The Switch mode power supply (SMPS) allows connecting an input voltage range of 6 VDC to 20 VDC suitable for industrial and automotive applications and environments.

The advanced CAN FD bitrate extends the data section's length to up to 64 bytes per frame and a data rate of up to 8 Mbps.
